The heart of the machine is the “Shukuteki Challenge,” the trial of rivals, which splits into two paths depending on the symbol obtained. The Qing Bang triad symbol opens a battle against Zhang Lieshan, Goran, Luo Hucheng, the Wusamen clan, and the Honghuahui henchmen. The heir symbol instead triggers a duel between Hokuto practitioners, against Zhang Taiyan or Liu Zongwu. The two winning modes are called “Souken” and “Tenju no Gi.”
Worth noting
During the buildup to a fight, the stars of the Big Dipper light up one by one, and the more that are lit, the better the player’s chances. If the death star, the Shichosei, lights up, victory is virtually guaranteed: the machine thus incorporates into its mechanics one of the most iconic symbols of the Hokuto universe. Other sequences draw from the source material, such as the moonrise heralding Yasaka, the appearance of the Taoist master, or Kenshiro’s cigarette, whose burning duration signals his chances.
