Airi (アイリ) is the younger sister of Rei; her disappearance is the primary motivation for his journey at the beginning of the story. On the day planned for her wedding, her future husband and the villagers are murdered by Jagi, who commits this crime by impersonating Kenshiro. Airi is then abducted and sold into slavery. From the carnage, Rei recovers only his sister's blood-stained wedding veil, which he keeps as a relic of his quest for vengeance.
Deeply traumatized by the violence she endures and by the cruelty of the post-apocalyptic world, she makes an extreme decision. Unable to bear what she sees, she voluntarily blinds herself by pouring poison into her own eyes. This desperate act symbolizes her refusal to go on living in a reality that has become unbearable.
Airi is then taken from the merchant who owned her by the Fang Clan (牙一族, Kiba Ichizoku, sometimes translated as Beast Clan), who use her as leverage against Rei to force him to kill Kenshiro. She is ultimately saved through the joint intervention of Rei and Kenshiro, who simulate a fight to the death by simultaneously striking each other's vital points to deceive the clan. Once the Fang Clan leader is defeated, Kenshiro restores her sight by manipulating her vital points, thus demonstrating the healing aspect of his martial art.
After her recovery, Airi progressively evolves. Inspired notably by the courage and determination of Rin in the face of Raoh's men, she develops a newfound inner strength. Initially fragile and broken, she gradually becomes more resilient and combative. During the attack on Mamiya's village by Raoh's troops, Airi takes up arms. She uses a crossbow and kills several soldiers to protect those she loves, a complete reversal for the young woman who had once voluntarily blinded herself rather than face the world.
Following Rei's tragic death, Airi chooses to remain in Mamiya's village. She leads a more discreet existence there, watching over her brother's grave and keeping his memory alive. Although her role remains secondary in the overall plot, she embodies a central element of Rei's journey: his reason to live, to fight, and ultimately to die. Her survival at the end of this narrative arc constitutes one of the rare notes of hope in a universe marked by violence and death.
