HEART OF MADNESS / PURPLE EYES
A song from the 1986 Hokuto no Ken movie, where it accompanies Rei’s battle against Raoh, “HEART OF MADNESS” is paired on the B-side with the ending theme “PURPLE EYES.” Both tracks are written, composed, and arranged by Tsuyoshi Ujiki, singer and guitarist of Kodomo Band.
In Young Guitar in 2026, Ujiki recalls a band hesitant about taking on an anime commission, and a Toei producer, Yoshio Takami, who came to convince him in person: “this isn’t a TV series, it’s a movie.” He ultimately built everything on his own, around synthesizers and programmed rhythms, going against the guitar-driven sound of the band, to the point that some fans accused him of “switching to pop music.” “PURPLE EYES,” a whispered ballad, was composed “entirely based on the image of Yuria.”
Both tracks were re-recorded by the band in 2007 and 2014, and appear on the 1987 compilation Hokuto no Ken Original Songs.
