Recreating the Techniques of Hokuto Shinken
The toy’s concept is summed up in a single slogan: “perfectly recreate Kenshiro’s secret techniques in the palm of your hands.” The back of the box showcases the figure in five martial arts moves captioned like a martial arts manual: the Hokuto Juha Zan kick that disperses the opponent’s fat, the Ganzan Ryozan Ha that splits the midline of the face, the Hokuto Zankai Ken with both thumbs on the temples, the Koshu Hagan Ken, and of course the Hokuto Hyakuretsu Ken. Full articulation is not just a technical selling point; it is the core of the play experience, allowing children in 1985 to reenact the Thursday evening death blows.
The Popy Legacy
The box bears the label “Bandai, Popy Division” (ポピー事業部), the legendary brand behind the Chogokin line, absorbed by Bandai in 1983 and still operating as an internal division at the time. The piece sporadically appears on Mercari and Yahoo Auctions Japan, bearing the marks of four decades… Along with the large sofubi figure from the same era, which has its own dedicated entry, it stands as a testament to the very first steps of Hokuto no Ken merchandising, when the Popy division was turning the Fuji TV phenomenon into toys for children.
