Game system
The machine is built around the battles of Kasumi Kenshiro, sixty-second heir of Hokuto Shinken. The confrontations are triggered during bonus phases and pit the hero against his rivals, including Liu Zongwu, heir of Hokuto Ryukaken, and Yasaka, master of Seito Getsuken. A victory extends the “Shukumei mode,” the mode of destiny; a defeat sends the player to a so-called prayer mode. The battle sequences follow a two-part structure, which multiplies the variations in how they unfold.
The playing field incorporates several mechanisms specific to the series’ universe. Below the screen, a spinning luminous compass announces the player’s destiny. A sensor named “Yan Wang,” after the nickname the Shanghainese give to Kenshiro, invites the player to pass their hand over the playing field to advance the sequence. Among the recurring staging elements are the scent premonition, echoing the character’s extraordinary sense of smell, and a sequence where Pan Yuling’s smile accompanies her return to battle.
Variants
A lighter version, the Digihane CR Souten no Ken STV, was put into service on April 12, 2010.
Of note
On the very day of its arrival in game halls, a trial version of the machine was offered on 777Town.net, the online gaming service of Sammy Networks, making it one of the rare Souten no Ken machines accessible outside of Japanese game halls. The cabinet bears the name “Homura,” the flame.
