Gameplay

The game offers two experiences: on one hand, a fully remade three-dimensional version, and on the other, the original Mark III version included as-is, for its collector value. In the revamped version, the characters and environments have been converted to polygons and the movements were recreated using motion capture, resulting in more spectacular fights than on the original 8-bit console. Kenshiro advances through side-scrolling levels, sweeping away enemies with Hokuto Shinken, with each stage concluding with a duel against a major adversary from the manga. In Story mode, Rei and Toki are also playable, and a dedicated boss-fight-only mode rounds out the package.

Published by Sega and developed by its studio 3D Ages, this title is part of the SEGA AGES 2500 collection, a lineup of reissued Sega classics sold at a budget price (2,500 yen). The remade version itself is of uneven quality and has been criticized for its very low difficulty, but the main appeal of the disc lies in the inclusion of the 1986 Mark III version, a cult classic title that some fans had at the time purchased an entire console just to be able to play. To this day, it remains the only official reissue on physical media of this very first game in the franchise.
