Prepublished since February 26, 2021 on Coamix's Zenon Henshubu platform, under the WEB Comic Zenyon label, it is collected in volumes by Coamix in the Zenon Comics collection. It is the second work by Kurao Hiroshi, who continues here the parody of the universe begun with Hokuto no Ken Kenoh-gun Zako-tachi no Banka. The series is still ongoing in Japan.
What if Hokuto no Ken had been a live-action drama? In a 1980s Japan where the manga by Buronson and Tetsuo Hara does not exist, a television crew is shooting an action drama titled "Hokuto no Ken," broadcast in the Friday evening slot, as indicated by the "Friday drama" banner on the covers. Hokuto Shinken? An improvisation by the director. Here is the chronicle of the blood, sweat and tears of those who shoot the series day and night.
Unlike the other spin-offs in the franchise, Seikimatsu Drama Satsuei-den does not transpose the characters into a new universe. It imagines that Hokuto no Ken never existed as a manga and that it is instead a television drama filmed in the early 1980s. Each iconic scene from the original work thus becomes the result of a set accident, a production constraint, or an improvised decision by the filming crew.
The founding gag of the series consists of explaining each iconic image from the saga through a filming reality. The post-apocalyptic sets come from the workshops, the legendary techniques are born from improvisations by director Haraguchi Katsuo, a tokusatsu veteran who stops at nothing to satisfy the viewer, while scriptwriter Muto Takanori sees his storylines rewritten on set and producer Sorie puts out fires behind the scenes. Episode after episode, the drama replays the storyline of the original manga, from old man Misumi and his rice seeds all the way to the Holy Emperor arc, brought to the screen in the last published volumes.
Around Tachibana Yuri, a young actor thrust into the role of Kenshiro, orbits a colorful cast. Kazaki Shoma, an idol trained in ballet, portrays Rei; Futami Ryoko, a former sukeban, plays Mamiya; Kuchiki Shigeru, a method acting devotee, loses himself in the role of Jagi; Hishikawa Koichi lends his popularity to Shin; Oishi Hironori doubles in the roles of Toki and Amiba; the young Himuro Sayaka lights up the role of Rin; Shimada Masaki, reshaped for the audition, takes on Raoh; Watanabe Satoru, a devoted admirer of Kazaki, assumes the role of Yuda; and finally Kashiwaba Ryukichi and Taniguchi Jin share the roles of Souther and Shu in the film version.
The series has been collected by Coamix since October 2021, eight volumes have been released to date and a ninth is expected for August 20, 2026. Unpublished in France, it is presented here with summaries translated from Japanese by us.
In Japan, the series is published by Coamix in the Zenon Comics collection. Nine volumes were released between October 20, 2021 and August 20, 2026. The digital edition is available on the major Japanese platforms. The series has not been released in France.
