Balga

Balga (バルガ) is a former general who once served under Raoh in Hokuto no Ken. After the disappearance of his master, he is among those former warriors unable to immediately find their place in a world slowly trying to rebuild itself. Behind his hardened soldier appearance, however, lies a man deeply devoted to his family, ready to do anything to protect his wife and his son Shingo.

A former general of Raoh's army

During the era when Raoh dominated the devastated lands, Balga was among his most loyal officers. Like many former soldiers of Ken-Ō's army, he spent a large part of his life in war and conquest. After Raoh's death, his men gradually deserted, and he found himself confronted with a reality he no longer knew how to handle: surviving in a world where strength alone was no longer enough.

Desperately seeking food for his family, Balga ultimately submitted to Kōketsu, a former groom in Raoh's army who had become a tyrannical local lord controlling the harvests and food resources of the region. Balga's wife eventually died of malnutrition, and his son Shingo, weakened by hunger, went blind. The child then became Balga's main vulnerability. Kōketsu took advantage of this situation to keep him under his control by using his family as leverage.

The revolt against Kōketsu

When Kenshiro finally intervenes against Kōketsu and puts an end to his reign, Balga gradually regains his dignity and the courage to rebel. Freed from the threat hanging over the other villagers' children, he takes control of Kōketsu's lands and attempts to rebuild a more peaceful existence there, far from the wars of domination that had marked the era of Raoh.

Later, after his journey to Sava and Blanca, Kenshiro places his trust in Balga. Believing that Ryū, the son of Raoh, must now follow his own path, he entrusts the child to Balga so that he can grow up far from conflict. Through this role, Balga symbolizes the post-Raoh era, a generation of former warriors forced to learn to live by something other than violence and conquest.
