Baran

Baran (バラン), also known as the Emperor of Light, is an antagonist appearing only in the final part of the Hokuto no Ken manga. Ruler of the kingdom of Blanca, he presents himself as a divine figure capable of saving the weak through techniques inspired by Hokuto Shinken. Behind this messianic image, however, hides a man consumed by hatred, whose tragic past has profoundly distorted his worldview.

A hatred born from tragedy

During his childhood, Baran lived with his young sister Yuka, who was gravely ill. Desperate at the thought of losing her, he stole medicine in an attempt to save her. But upon seeing the blood on her brother's hands, Yuka refused the treatment and chose to pray until her last breath. This death left a lasting mark on Baran, who developed a deep hatred toward God and all forms of faith.

Later, fascinated by the power of Raoh on the battlefields, Baran sought to learn Hokuto Shinken in order to obtain the strength needed to defy God himself. Raoh, however, refused to officially pass on this art to him, explaining that the sacred technique could only be taught to a single successor. Baran then attempted to understand its secrets simply by observing Raoh's fights and reproducing certain techniques.

The Emperor of Light

Years later, Baran takes control of the kingdom of Blanca and calls himself the Emperor of Light. Using the knowledge he acquired from Hokuto Shinken, he heals certain sick people and impresses the population, who eventually come to regard him as a divine figure. In reality, he rules the kingdom as a false messiah, keeping the true king imprisoned while manipulating the people through fear and veneration.

Baran also holds captive Princess Luseli, the fiancee of Satora, the young son of King Asam of Sava. The young woman reminds him of his lost sister, which explains the obsessive attachment he develops toward her. Convinced that he is acting to protect those he loves, Baran gradually descends into a form of madness where compassion and domination become impossible to distinguish.

The fight against Kenshiro

Kenshiro eventually confronted Baran during his journey with Ryū, the son of Raoh. Although Baran had mastered certain techniques inspired by Hokuto Shinken, including an imitation of Raoh's Hokuto Gōshōha, he remained unable to reach the true level of an heir to the school. Kenshiro managed to defeat him and make him understand the consequences of his actions.

Moved by Ryū's courage and aware of his mistakes, Baran then decided to free the true king of Blanca and take responsibility for his crimes. Refusing to flee from his fate, he accepted being executed by the people he had manipulated. Before dying, he unwittingly offered Ryū a final lesson on sacrifice and the greatness of a man capable of owning up to his faults to the very end.
