Rin (リン) is one of Kenshiro's most faithful companions, present throughout the entire Hokuto no Ken series. Orphaned and rendered mute after the massacre of her family by bandits, she travels the devastated lands with Bat and the successor of Hokuto, and eventually becomes one of the leaders of the Hokuto Army. The late revelation of her origins, as the younger twin sister of the Celestial Empress, makes her one of the central characters of the second part of the series.
Rin loses her family at a very young age, massacred before her eyes by a band of marauders during the years following the nuclear war of 199X. The trauma robs her of the ability to speak. She is taken in by the inhabitants of a small village and works there as a prison guard.
It is in this role that she meets Kenshiro, captured and suspected by the villagers. Moved by this taciturn stranger, she secretly brings him water, a gesture that seals their first bond.
When the warlord Zeed attacks the village, Kenshiro breaks his chains and annihilates the raiders. Before resuming his journey, he presses one of the vital points of Hokuto Shinken on Rin's neck and restores her ability to speak: her first words are to thank him.
Deeply moved by this act of kindness, Rin refuses to forget the successor of Hokuto and sets out to find him. She is abducted shortly after by the Golan, a militia that captures young girls to breed a superior race, then saved once again by Kenshiro. From that moment on, she accompanies him along with Bat across the post-apocalyptic world, witnessing the rise of the Man with the Seven Scars.
Over the course of the journey, Rin becomes the group's conscience and the rare light in Kenshiro's life. Despite her young age, she displays remarkable courage in the face of the worst warlords, refuses to give in to fear before Raoh's men, and on several occasions inspires characters such as Airi, Rei's sister.
Her relationship with Bat, marked by childish bickering, slowly evolves into a deep affection. She also holds an unconditional childlike attachment to Kenshiro, which he accepts without ever reciprocating on the same level.
After Raoh's death and Kenshiro's temporary disappearance, Rin grows into an adult. Together with Bat, she founds the Army of Hokuto, named in tribute to Kenshiro. The organization fights against the abuses of the Celestial Empire led by the viceroy Jakoh.
Rin actively participates in the resistance, liberates several imperial cities, and strives to protect the populations oppressed by Jakoh's troops. Her commitment and charisma eventually attract numerous survivors to her cause, including Falco, successor of Gentō Kō Ken, when he turns against Jakoh.
The great revelation of the Tentei arc is that Rin is actually the younger twin sister of Rui, the true Celestial Empress. At their birth, the rule of succession required the elimination of one of the two twins; Falco, who had been ordered by Jakoh to carry it out, could not bring himself to kill an infant and entrusted the young Rin to his own uncle and aunt, who raised her as their own child until the massacre by the bandits.
When Rin enters the imperial palace with Bat and Ein, the two sisters are reunited in the catacombs where Rui had been held prisoner. Ein's sacrifice makes it possible to free the Empress, and Falco turns against Jakoh, whom he finishes off.
Just as peace seems to be returning, Rin is kidnapped by Jask (Tiger in the anime), the sadistic son of Jakoh, who takes her across the Sea of Death to the Land of Shura. Kenshiro crosses the ocean to save her.
There, Rin is captured by Kaioh, who wishes to make her the mother of his heir in order to purify the Hokuto Ryūken bloodline. Faced with the young woman's refusal, the first Rashō presses the vital point Shikanhaku on her out of pure cruelty: the victim falls in love with the first man she sees upon awakening.
Hyoh, freed from Kaioh's hold by his battle against Kenshiro, saves Rin from a horde of Shura who in turn wanted to take advantage of her condition. At the cost of his last remaining strength, he allows Bat to recover the unconscious Rin and bring her to Kenshiro, hoping she will awaken before the man she already loves.
Fate decides otherwise: Bat, aware of Rin's feelings for Kenshiro, takes the risk of being the first person she will see upon waking in order to save her from Kaioh. The young woman gradually grows attached to him, and after the events of Shura, she ultimately chooses to stay by his side rather than follow Kenshiro on his new journeys. The love triangle between Kenshiro, Bat and Rin thus finds its resolution in the final chapters of the manga.
In the original animated series (1984-1988), young Rin is voiced by Tomiko Suzuki, and her adult alter ego in Hokuto no Ken 2 by Miina Tominaga. Maaya Sakamoto takes on the role in the Shin Kyūseishu Densetsu trilogy. In the 2026 new animated adaptation, Mao Ichimichi (M.A.O) lends her voice to the character.
