Zeed (ジード, Jīdo), sometimes referred to simply as Z or Z-666 in reference to the tattoo on his forehead, is the very first antagonist encountered by Kenshiro in Hokuto no Ken. A giant standing 218 cm tall and weighing 163 kg, leader of the Zeed Gang, a motorized gang terrorizing the devastated wastelands of the year 199X, he has the tragic honor of being the first canonical victim of the Hokuto Hyakuretsu Ken (北斗百裂拳) and the first man in the manga to hear the iconic line "Omae wa mō shindeiru" (お前はもう死んでいる, "You are already dead"), which has since become one of the most famous quotes in shōnen history. He is voiced by Eiji Kanie in the 1984 animated series, by Hidekatsu Shibata in the 1986 film, and by Kenji Nomura in the new animated adaptation of 2026.
Zeed is the leader of a gang of apocalyptic bikers recognizable by their mohawk crests and the letter Z tattooed on every member's forehead. The gang roams the post-nuclear desert, plundering nomadic caravans for their water, food and ammunition, throwing money on the ground as worthless in a world where currency has ceased to hold value. Zeed's design is visually inspired by Wez, the biker from the film Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981), a direct reference openly acknowledged by Tetsuo Hara. This first scene of the manga, published in 1983 in Weekly Shōnen Jump, immediately sets the stage for the post-apocalyptic shōnen: scarce resources, absolute violence, the law of the strongest.
His monstrous stature, exaggerated by Kenshiro in the early chapters to the point of giving him almost ogrish proportions, is enough to impose his authority without him needing to demonstrate any particular martial technique. The manga never actually shows him truly fighting: he simply carries an axe and makes threats, relying on his sheer mass to intimidate his victims.
Chapter 1 of Hokuto no Ken opens with the attack by Zeed and his men on the village where Rin, a young orphan who serves as a cell guard, and Bat, a thief passing through, live. Before Zeed himself arrived, his scouting party had already been eliminated in a strange manner: no external wounds, but bodies destroyed from the inside. Zeed does not yet know who the man with the seven scars is, but unease is beginning to show in him.
When the gang moves into the village, Zeed personally takes Rin hostage and threatens to snap her neck if the villagers do not hand over their supplies. It is at that moment that Kenshiro, held prisoner in the cell Rin was guarding, breaks free of his chains and steps into the light.
The confrontation between Zeed and Kenshiro is instantaneous and asymmetric. Convinced that his sheer size will be enough to crush this silent stranger, Zeed advances, brandishing his axe. Kenshiro strikes his vital points Keiraku Hikō (経絡秘孔) in a fraction of a second using the Hokuto Hyakuretsu Ken, the "Hundred Crack Fist."
Believing himself unharmed, Zeed prepares to retaliate. It is then that Kenshiro utters the words that will define the entire rest of the franchise: "Omae wa mō shindeiru", translated as "You are already dead." Zeed's last word before his explosion, "Nani?!" ("What?!"), has itself become a canonical meme, giving rise to the ritual phrase that would be repeated dozens of times throughout the series, inseparable from the explosion that follows. This foundational scene from Chapter 1 launches the entire series: Zeed is the first death, the first "already dead," and frees Rin as he collapses.
Zeed's short role in the main manga is compensated by his regular presence in the extended franchise. In the derivative manga Shirogane no Seija - Hokuto no Ken : Toki Gaiden by Yuka Nagate (2007-2008), he is manipulated by Amiba, who pushes him to attack the Village of Miracles. On the night of the assault, his gang is repelled by the combined efforts of Toki, Jūza and the villagers. Toki spares him but erases his memory of the episode using the Hokuto Kyomu Shidan (北斗虚無指弾, "Void Finger of Hokuto"), thus ensuring consistency with the main manga where Zeed has no memory of Toki or the Village of Miracles.
Although Zeed only appears across a few pages, his role as the first on the list has made him one of the iconic figures of Hokuto no Ken. His silhouette is regularly featured in collectible figurines, notably by Kaiyodo in the Revoltech line, which offers a Zeed equipped with interchangeable parts that simulate his final explosion by the Hokuto Shinken. The parody series DD Hokuto no Ken also features him as a recurring character: he leads the Otsu Group (a parody of the KING organization) under the pseudonym Otsu no 666, and continues to be ridiculed by Kenshiro.
The 2026 anime produced by TMS Entertainment reintroduced Zeed in its very first episode, released on April 10, 2026 on Prime Video, faithfully following the storyline of chapter 1 of the manga and restoring the iconic phrase in its original context. This faithfulness was praised by critics as one of the strengths of the new animated adaptation.
