Details
Jūza (ジュウザ) is one of the five guardians of the Nanto Goshasei and embodies the Star of the Clouds. An unpredictable warrior devoted to his freedom, he developed a unique fighting style that defies the rules of classical martial arts schools. Behind his carefree attitude lies a man scarred by an impossible love for Yuria, whom he would ultimately protect at the cost of his own life.
Jūza is a member of the Nanto Goshasei, the five guardians tasked with protecting the Last General of Nanto. Each member of this group is associated with a symbolic element, and Jūza embodies the Clouds, a perfect representation of his free and untamable temperament.
Unlike the other protectors of Nanto, Jūza refuses any strict discipline or military hierarchy. He lives by his own rules and spends much of his life wandering the desolate wastelands without material ties. This independence makes him a completely unpredictable fighter.
During his childhood, Jūza grew up alongside Yuria and quickly fell in love with her. Convinced that he would one day be able to marry her, he long harbored the hope of a life together. His dreams were shattered when he discovered that Yuria was his half-sister, the daughter of the same father. Unable to accept this impossible love, Jūza then sank into wandering, excess, and escapism. Behind his provocative behavior, however, lay a pain that never healed.
Jūza does not follow any classical martial style of Nanto Seiken. He develops his own fighting art, the Garyū no Ken (我流の拳, "Fist of the Free Style"), an art based on unpredictability and adaptation. His irregular movements, sometimes acrobatic, sometimes borrowed from wrestling, are indecipherable even for experienced opponents. This lack of structure reflects his very personality, which refuses any constraint.
When the other members of the Nanto Goshasei ask Jūza to confront Raoh in order to protect the Last General of Nanto, he initially refuses, staying true to his independent nature. His decision changes when he discovers that the Last General is none other than Yuria. From that moment on, he agrees to fight Raoh in order to allow Kenshiro to reach the woman he loves.
During their first confrontation, Jūza catches Raoh off guard with his unpredictable style. He even manages to steal Kokuō, the legendary horse of Ken-Ō, a feat no other man had ever accomplished before him. This humiliation drives Raoh to acknowledge him as a truly formidable opponent.
Jūza engages in a second confrontation against Raoh to delay his march toward Yuria. Despite the difference in power, he fights to the point of exhaustion without ever revealing the identity of the Last General. Gravely wounded, he continues to rise again before Ken-Ō, and even after sustaining fatal injuries, he defies Raoh until his last breath. Impressed by his determination, Raoh posthumously acknowledges the valor of his adversary and orders that he receive an honorable funeral, Kokuō himself paying tribute to the fallen warrior. This mark of respect remains exceptional coming from the conqueror of Hokuto.
The spin-off manga Hokuto no Ken Jūza Gaiden - Hōkō no Kumo (北斗の拳 ジュウザ外伝 彷徨の雲, "The Wandering Cloud"), published from January to October 2010 in Weekly Comic Bunch and drawn by Missile Kakurai, develops Jūza's past, his post-apocalyptic wandering, and his philosophy of absolute independence. The work also highlights his regrets and his difficulty in finding meaning in his life.
