Seiji

Seiji (セイジ) is the main antagonist of OAVs 2 and 3 of Shin Hokuto no Ken (2003-2004). A renegade of the Hokumon temple and son of Sanga, he is bound to his father by a relationship of intertwined love and hate: Sanga abandoned him as a child in the devastated lands, a behavior whose motivation, as he would later reveal, was paradoxically protective, meant to toughen him up to survive the end of the century. Taken in by the monks of the Hokumon, Seiji mastered the entirety of the secrets of Hokumon no Ken in less than three years, a meteoric progression that attests to both his talent and his obsession.

Hokumon no Ken and the Flight from the Temple

Hokumon no Ken is the martial art practiced by the reclusive monks of the Hokumon temple, whose community, nicknamed the Cliffdwellers, lives in the heights of a forbidden mountain range. The temple was built on a former biological, chemical, and nuclear weapons disposal site: its guardians sealed the mountain to prevent anyone from recovering these remnants, and any desertion from the order is punishable by death. Seiji is precisely one of the few who managed to flee the temple, defeating the assassins sent after him. His break with the order is both an act of apostasy and a programmed patricide: he leaves in order to kill his father.

The seizure of Last Land

Seiji arrives at Last Land driven by a single objective: to kill Sanga and steal his power, but he discovers that Kenshiro has beaten him to it by slaying the tyrant at the end of the first OAV. Taking advantage of Kenshiro's absence, as he has left to find a cure for Bista in the Clifflands, Seiji seizes the city, turns what remains of his father's men to his own advantage, and takes Sara prisoner. At first, he does not realize she is the same little girl he had saved from a wild dog during their shared childhood. This belated revelation adds an extra tragic dimension to his arc, that of a man who unknowingly brutalized the very thing he was searching for.

Defeat and chosen death

His final confrontation with Kenshiro is cut short: the latter points out that the ascetic nature of the Hokumon no Ken makes it inferior to the assassin style of Hokuto Shinken, and defeats him. Vanquished, Seiji does not collapse: he chooses his own end. He presses the fatal pressure point Heiketsushu (閉血愁) upon himself in expiation for his crimes, explaining before dying the reasons that led him to this point. His death is not a defeat but a final act of lucidity about a life built around a hatred from which he could no longer free himself.

Voice Acting

In the OAVs Shin Hokuto no Ken (2003-2004), Seiji is voiced by singer Gackt, who also performs the opening Lu:na and the ending Oasis of the series. This was the artist's very first anime voice acting role.
