Soga

Soga (ソウガ, Sōga) is a character introduced in the Shin Kyūseishu Densetsu pentalogy, more specifically in the film Raō Den Junai no Shō (2006), before being fully developed in the manga and anime Ten no Haō - Hokuto no Ken : Raō Gaiden (2006-2008). Strategic advisor and right-hand man of Raoh, a childhood friend of his originating from the land of Asura, he is the elder brother of Reina. Nicknamed Idaten no Sōga (韋駄天のソウガ, "Soga of the Swift Feet"), he embodies the political and military side of Raoh's army, as a counterpoint to the emotional dimension brought by his sister. A master of the Sūzan Senpū Kyaku (嵩山旋風脚, "Whirlwind Kick of Mount Songshan"), he thus combines genuine martial prowess with his strategic role.

Role in Raoh's army

Soga holds the position of chief advisor to Raoh throughout the pentalogy. Along with his sister, he left the land of Asura to follow his childhood friend who had become the King of Fists. In this capacity, he plans military campaigns, coordinates troops and ensures continuity of command in Raoh's absence. His tactical intelligence and his grasp of the political stakes of the end of the century make him an indispensable linchpin of the organization. In Ten no Haō, he loses his right leg during an escape from the Cassandra fortress where he had sacrificed himself to allow Raoh and Reina to flee, an injury he would compensate for with a mechanical prosthesis amplifying the power of his kick. His vision, however, goes beyond mere service: Soga secretly dreams of reuniting Raoh with his two Hokuto brothers, Toki and Kenshiro, under a shared supremacy.

Relationship with Reina and Raoh

The dynamic between Soga, his sister Reina and Raoh constitutes one of the original narrative threads of the film series. Soga is fully aware of Reina's feelings for Raoh, and his loyalty to the conqueror is coupled with a protective vigilance over his sister. He watches, powerless, the impossible relationship that binds Reina to a man whose destiny is to die in battle.

A staged death

Consumed by an incurable disease whose end he knows is near, Soga chooses to give his death a strategic purpose. Observing that Raoh's troops are growing lax and losing their discipline, he devises with his lord a plan that neither of them reveals to anyone: Soga stages a fake assassination attempt against Raoh, who ostentatiously kills him by his own hand in front of the army to restore fear and discipline within the ranks. The truth behind this staging is only revealed to Reina, through a letter written by Soga himself, in which she learns that both the assassin and Raoh were in on the secret. This death, seemingly brutal and incomprehensible, is one of the emotional peaks of the pentalogy films: the final strategic maneuver of an advisor who, to the very end, placed his lord's interests above his own.

Soga is voiced by Unshō Ishizuka in Raō Den Junai no Shō (with Kōki Miyata for the flashbacks of Soga as a child) and by Masaya Matsukaze in the anime Ten no Haō.
