With its Fist of the North Star statue series, Japanese manufacturer SpiceSeed has established itself as a reference in high-end sculpting drawn from the manga by Buronson and Tetsuo Hara. Its latest piece breaks new ground, however, by abandoning PVC and resin in favor of hand-carved wood. Unveiled in April 2026 at the SpiceSeed Festival, the “Wood Sculpture Raoh & Kokuō” is a limited-edition collectible, hand-carved from carefully selected natural wood.
Details
A prototype signed by Matsuura Ken
The prototype sculpting was entrusted to Matsuura Ken, a major figure in Japanese modeling and the creator of numerous pieces in the line. His work seeks to convey the dignity of Raoh, the conqueror of the end of the century, as well as the fierce gaze and dynamic musculature of his steed, the Black King. SpiceSeed describes a striking beauty, poised to come alive, to the point where one can almost hear the thundering hooves of Kokuō.
An entirely hand-carved finish
Working from the approved prototype, master wood carvers take over the piece and work it in detail, from the facial expressions to the musculature and coat of Kokuō. The stated goal is to make use of the natural grain of the wood to elevate each piece to the status of an object with a singular presence. SpiceSeed’s main argument can be summed up in a single sentence: to restore a vitality, a weight, and a presence that mass production cannot achieve. Since the grain and nuances of the wood vary from one piece to the next, each example is by nature unique. It is a “one-of-a-kind” Raoh that the manufacturer intends to deliver.
The value of a unique piece
The wood used is a high-quality natural wood, selected for its grain, tone, and density. Since the character of the material depends on the area from which it is carved, each finished sculpture is different. SpiceSeed also highlights the patina of natural wood, whose character deepens over time.
Made to order, limited edition
Since the piece is crafted entirely by hand, producible quantities remain limited. SpiceSeed operates on a pre-order basis, with production launched once a certain volume is reached. Shipping is announced approximately twelve months after the close of online pre-orders, a timeframe that may vary depending on production progress.
