Hokuto no Ken Gekiuchi (Typing Series) (北斗の拳 激打)
Gameplay
Despite its video game appearance, this is first and foremost a typing tutor software designed to teach touch typing. Enemies from the manga appear on screen, each associated with characters or short phrases to type. A correct keystroke triggers Kenshiro’s attack, and completing an entire sequence unleashes a secret technique, sometimes concluded by pressing the space bar for the finishing blow. The game fully embraces the humor and over-the-top style characteristic of the series, complete with iconic voices and catchphrases, even going so far as to invent fanciful techniques that do not exist in the original work.
Of Note
The series was launched in 1999 by SSI Tristar, under the title Typing Ōgi : Hokuto no Ken Gekiuchi. While most typing software of the era simply had users type words on screen, Gekiuchi added the dimension of a character-driven game where successful typing lets the player defeat enemies. This earned it genuine commercial success, with over two hundred thousand copies sold despite a modest budget.
The concept was subsequently expanded into numerous versions over the years: an SE version, a sequel titled Typing Haō : Gekiuchi 2, a Gekiuchi ZERO, a third installment Gekiuchi 3 – Typing Hyakuretsuken, as well as online versions and later editions. Remaining exclusive to the Japanese market, the series exemplifies a late 1990s trend in which many popular franchises were adapted into typing tutor software.
