Gokuaku no Hana : Hokuto no Ken Jagi Gaiden

Gokuaku no Hana : Hokuto no Ken Jagi Gaiden is a manga drawn by Hiromoto Sin-ichi based on an original concept by Buronson and Tetsuo Hara, serialized in Weekly Comic Bunch (Shinchosha) in 2009 and compiled into two volumes. Dedicated to Jagi, the third of the four Hokuto brothers, it tells the story of a boy seeking the affection of his adoptive father Ryuken who descends into cruelty. The series has been available in French since 2024 from Crunchyroll under the title Hokuto no Ken, La Légende de Jagi.

Synopsis

After the nuclear war, Jagi usurps Kenshiro's name and terrorizes innocent people. In the past, however, Jagi was an ordinary boy who cherished his father Ryuken. One day, two boys brought in without explanation, Raoh and Toki, are promised Hokuto Shinken, the art that means everything to his father. Excluded from the candidates for succession, Jagi runs away and picks himself back up thanks to new friendships, until the next shock: the entry into the race of a candidate younger than him, Kenshiro.

The canon seen from Jagi's side

The story revisits the youth of the Hokuto brothers from the perspective of the unloved one. Saved as a baby from a fire by Ryuken, Jagi is the first taken in by the master but the last admitted among the candidates for succession. The defeat of Shiba, a practitioner of Byakuja Ken who came to challenge the dojo, leads Ryuken to finally include him in the race, and the master passes on the Hokuto Rakan Geki to him. Around him revolve Anna, a young girl from a biker gang who becomes his anchor, and her brother Boss. After the cataclysm, the Crazies, having become the Mohicans gang, cause Anna's death, and Jagi tips over for good, up to his end reprised from the original manga. The origin of his helmet is also told.

The manga also offers its reading of two techniques from the original manga, the Hokuto Rakan Geki, which can only be mastered by one who renounces hatred and resentment, and the Hokuto Senju Satsu, presented as a technique that Jagi invents on his own during his runaway period, "a technique that does not exist" according to Ryuken.

Publication in the Weekly Comic Bunch

After the one-shot Hokuto no Ken Ryuken Gaiden : The Judgement Day released in late 2006, Hiromoto Sin-ichi returned in the Weekly Comic Bunch with this series, the fourth serialized gaiden in the weekly magazine. Published from combined issue 4-5 of 2009, released in late December 2008, to combined issue 36-37 of August 2009, it comprises fifteen chapters, supplemented by a standalone story published in issue 23. The serialization was interrupted between issues 24 and 33, as Hiromoto had been hospitalized following an injury.
