Hokuto no Ken Gedoden LIFE is OFFSIDE

LIFE is OFFSIDE (北斗の拳 外道伝 LIFE is OFFSIDE) is a one-shot published in Monthly Comic Zenon on December 25, 2012. Drawn by Yukito-imouto, this five-page story devoted to Spade belongs to the Hokuto no Ken Gedoden block published for the series' thirtieth anniversary. It was subsequently collected at the end of the first volume of Ichigo Aji.

Synopsis

A boy born in a town ravaged by hunger finds a football among the trash. Convinced that he can save his town through sports, he devotes his life to this dream…

A life summarized in four pages

The story opens in a city ravaged by hunger and disease, where a boy is born who, rather than going to school, rummages through mountains of garbage. There he discovers a football that will change his life. The child quickly reveals exceptional talent and swears to lift his city out of misery through the sport. At sixteen, he already lands a striker position at a prestigious professional club.

A serious foul by an opponent during a match threatens to shatter his career. The diagnosis is final: he will never play again. Yet he refuses to give up and, through relentless rehabilitation, returns to the highest level and once again becomes his team's star player, before a teammate jealous of his talent has him accused of ties to the mafia and illegal gambling. For three years, behind bars, he never stops training alone. Once freed, he returns to the pitch, rises to the national team and, buoyed by the media and rekindled friendships, devotes everything he owns to his hometown, which finally sees the arrival of running water, a school and a small hospital.

Just as his dream finally seems to be coming true, nuclear fire annihilates everything. Devastated before his city reduced to ashes, the young man draws one certainty from it: there is no god. Then, without transition, a colossus appears at the head of a biker gang, screaming those words in the face of the world. The reader recognizes Spade, and the story reconnects with the scene from the original manga. Kenshiro strikes him down, Spade laughingly claims he was faking it, then explodes in the next panel.

The meaning of offside

LIFE is OFFSIDE is the most stripped-down of the Gedoden block stories. Where HEART of Meet devotes several dozen pages to its protagonist's downfall, this one condenses an entire life into four pages before concluding on a single death scene. The whole piece is carried by narration alone, with no dialogue until the final intrusion, and the protagonist is never named. Up until the nuclear fire, each stage follows the conventions of the classic sports narrative: the rise, the injury, the injustice, the redemption, then success.

The story never shows the transformation into Spade. Between the panel where the hero gazes upon the ruins of his city and the one where he reappears at the head of a gang of looters, an immense ellipsis remains. The narration delivers only the endpoint, the certainty gained before the ashes, that no god exists. This ellipsis constitutes the story's main narrative device. The reader is thus invited to imagine for themselves the path that leads a man who devoted his life to saving his own to become one of the criminals that Kenshiro eliminates in a matter of moments.

The title plays on the offside rule, which invalidates an action that was nonetheless carried through to completion. In the same way, the character's destiny is annihilated at the very moment he seemed to reach his goal.
