Hyoh

Hyoh (ヒョウ) is one of the central characters in the Land of Shura arc in Hokuto no Ken. Second Rashō of the Land of Demons and master of Hokuto Ryūken, he is also the elder biological brother of Kenshiro. Behind his cold and ruthless appearance lies a man scarred by manipulation, the loss of his memories, and his bond with the original Hokuto lineage.

Kenshiro's elder brother

Hyoh belongs to the main branch of the Hokuto family and carries the blood of the Hokuto Sōke passed down through generations. During his childhood on the Land of Demons, as the country descends into war, Jukei decides to send baby Kenshiro to Japan along with Raoh and Toki so they can be entrusted to Ryuken, master of Hokuto Shinken. Hyoh, for his part, remains in the land of Shura to learn Hokuto Ryūken.

Unlike Kaioh, Hyoh possesses a compassionate nature and remains deeply attached to his younger brother. Fearing that this sensitivity could become a dangerous weakness, Jukei attempts to seal his memories related to Kenshiro, but hesitates at the last moment. Hyoh then pretends to have forgotten everything, secretly preserving the memory of his brother. It is Kaioh who, later, truly seals this memory after discovering the truth about their shared heritage.

The Rashō of Hokuto Ryūken

Having become the second Rashō of the Land of Shura, Hyoh rules alongside Kaioh and Han over the Land of Demons. Despite his power, he proves less cruel than Kaioh, which earns him the respect of a large portion of the inhabitants of Shura.

Hyoh has mastered Hokuto Ryūken, a dark branch of Hokuto founded on matōki, a demonic aura that greatly amplifies the practitioner's power while threatening to consume their reason. Despite this strength, he remains haunted by buried emotions and memories that he cannot bring to light.

Sayaka and Kaioh's manipulation

Among the rare individuals capable of calming Hyoh is Sayaka, Kaioh's younger sister and Hyoh's own fiancee. Kaioh exploits this attachment to better manipulate Hyoh. After killing Sayaka himself and framing Kenshiro for the crime, he drives Hyoh to unleash the full power of his matōki and charge against the successor of Hokuto Shinken, hoping that one will kill the other.

The battle against Kenshiro

When Kenshiro arrives in the land of Shura, Hyoh is still unaware that he is his own brother. Their confrontation pits two heirs of Hokuto bound by blood yet separated by everything.

The duel between Hokuto Shinken and Hokuto Ryūken quickly escalates into an exceptionally violent battle. Despite his demonic power, Hyoh gradually sees the buried memories of his childhood resurface through contact with Kenshiro. After his defeat, he regains his memory and understands Kaioh's manipulations. Having become himself again, he then chooses to turn against his former master.

The end of Hyoh

Alongside Kuroyasha, Hyoh carves a path through Kaioh's three hundred elite soldiers to reach Kenshiro. Gravely wounded, he arrives too late: Kaioh has already been defeated. Unable to deliver the fatal blow to his former master, Hyoh forgives him for his crimes and dies in Kaioh's arms, recognized one last time as his brother and aware of the suffering that consumed Kaioh his entire life. His passing closes the story of a man torn between the compassion of the original Hokuto and the violence of the land of Shura.
