Details
Mamiya (マミヤ) is the leader of the village that bears her name and one of the main allies of Kenshiro and Rei during the first part of Hokuto no Ken. Her striking resemblance to Yuria unsettles Kenshiro when they first meet. Scarred for life by the abduction she suffered at the age of twenty, she renounced her femininity to become a formidable warrior, armed with bladed yo-yos and sharp spikes, and defends her village against the marauders who plague the devastated lands.
Mamiya's village, founded by her parents thanks to an underground water source that made it an oasis, had been living self-sufficiently until the nuclear war plunged the region into chaos. On the day of her twentieth birthday, the village is attacked by the men of Yuda, master of Nanto Kōkaku Ken, drawn by the young woman's legendary beauty. Yuda slaughters Mamiya's parents before her eyes and abducts her to make her one of his concubines.
To brand her as his property, he has the UD emblem tattooed on her shoulder, designating his school. Mamiya eventually escapes, but the trauma drives her to definitively reject her femininity, cut her hair short, and learn to use weapons. She takes over the leadership of the village and makes the defense of its inhabitants her reason for living.
Under Mamiya's authority, the village transforms into a fortified bastion. Unable to master a martial art like Hokuto Shinken or Nanto Seiken, she relies on organization, ambush tactics, and an arsenal of ranged weapons that she wields with exceptional precision. Her arsenal includes bladed yo-yos that she launches at high speed, emeici (double-pointed steel pins used in Chinese wushu), a portable crossbow, and several concealed knives.
This specialization allows her to hold her own against physically superior fighters by exploiting distance, angle, and surprise. The village thus becomes a refuge for survivors from the devastated lands and a recurring target for neighboring warlords.
When the Kiba clan threatens the village, Mamiya hires Kenshiro, who is traveling with Bat and Rin, as a mercenary to defend the village. Rei, master of Nanto Suichō Ken, initially allies with the Kibas before siding with Mamiya after meeting her.
Kenshiro is unsettled: Mamiya resembles Yuria, whom he believes to be lost, and Mamiya develops feelings for the Hokuto successor. But Kenshiro does not return her feelings, his heart still devoted to his fiancee.
During a Kiba raid, Mamiya's younger brother, Kō, the last remaining relative she had, is captured and then publicly executed. This tragedy drives Kenshiro and Rei to put a definitive end to the threat of the clan. Mamiya actively participates in the expedition toward the fortress of Kiba Daiō.
During the final battle, Mamiya gives herself up as a hostage by posing as Kenshiro's fiancee so that Airi, the sister of Rei held captive by the Kibas, can be freed. The ruse allows Kenshiro and Rei to fake their deaths and annihilate the clan, freeing both women.
When Rei is condemned to die in three days by Raoh, who strikes his vital pressure point Shinketsushū (新血愁), Mamiya sets out alone for Medicine City to find a remedy that might ease his suffering. She is captured by Galf, the local lord, who discovers the UD mark on her shoulder and reveals her past as a slave of Yuda. Rei and Kenshiro arrive in time to free her, but the remedy eludes them.
Learning of Mamiya's story, Rei decides to devote his remaining days to avenging her. With the help of Toki, who presses the Shinreidai (心霊台) pressure point to extend Rei's life by one day, the master of Nanto Suichō Ken confronts Yuda in his lair and defeats him, restoring the honor that had been stolen from Mamiya.
Back at the village, Rei dies in Mamiya's arms after confessing his feelings to her. With his last breath, he asks her to reclaim her femininity and abandon the way of weapons. To honor this final wish, Mamiya gives up her life as a warrior and only appears sporadically in the remainder of the manga.
Mamiya's design is loosely inspired by Saki Asamiya, the heroine of the manga Sukeban Deka by Shinji Wada. Her athletic build, her use of the yo-yo, and her clothing style draw on several visual elements from this 1970s shojo icon, transposed into the post-apocalyptic universe of Hokuto no Ken.
