Ramo

Ramo (ラモ) is a character exclusive to the manga Toki Gaiden : Shirogane no Seija (北斗の拳 トキ外伝 銀の聖者, 2007-2008), drawn by Yuka Nagate and serialized in Weekly Comic Bunch. A wise and honest old servant, he was entrusted to Toki by Ryuken before the grand master's death. This charge makes him the faithful wandering companion who accompanies Toki through the devastated lands after the latter renounced the succession of Hokuto Shinken due to radiation exposure.

A mission entrusted by Ryuken

Before his death, Ryuken places Ramo at Toki's side, aware that his adoptive son, doomed by radiation sickness, will set out alone on the roads to heal survivors. Ramo is neither a fighter nor a disciple of Hokuto Shinken: he is an elderly, calm man whose value lies in his common sense, his moral compass, and his understanding of people. He serves as assistant, advisor, and witness to Toki's work.

This singular status makes him one of the very few secondary characters in the gaiden who are genuinely developed over time: Ramo appears in nearly all of the 53 chapters spread across 6 volumes, from the moment Toki leaves the dōjō until his imprisonment in Cassandra.

Companion of the Village of Miracles

When Toki comes upon a hamlet whose inhabitants are all dying of a disease, it is in the company of Ramo that he decides to stop there. The master heals all the villagers in a single night using the pressure points of Hokuto Shinken, and the hamlet is immediately renamed the Village of Miracles.

Ramo helps Toki organize the makeshift clinic, manages relations with the inhabitants, welcomes newcomers, and watches over the master during his bouts of fatigue caused by radiation exposure. He also takes part in the defense of the village when it attracts the greed of Zeed's gang, and later the troops sent by Jagi and Amiba to deliver Toki to Raoh.

Freely chosen loyalty

In the world of Hokuto no Ken where loyalty is almost always imposed through fear or martial prowess, Ramo represents a voluntary loyalty, that of an ordinary man who follows Toki not out of compulsion but out of sincere attachment and a sense of duty toward the memory of Ryuken. This contrast gives Toki Gaiden a more intimate and more human tone than the other spin-off stories from the franchise.

His constant presence plays an important role in the characterization of Toki, subtly underscoring his solitude and his tendency to efface himself for others. Through Ramo's eyes, the reader sees Toki as he truly is: a silver saint who burns himself out for those he saves.
