Shōki

Shōki (ショウキ) is a general of the Imperial Capital who served Empress Rui alongside Falco, and the man who once provided Kenshiro and Yuria with a refuge where they could live out Yuria's final years. A longtime friend of the Hokuto Shinken successor, he pays for his loyalty to the true Tentei with his life during the Imperial Capital arc. His name is derived from Zhong Kui (鍾馗), the demon-hunting god of Chinese mythology.

The refuge offered to Kenshiro and Yuria

Well before the imperial arc, Shōki guards his own village. It is there that a wandering Kenshiro, traveling with a gravely ill Yuria, frees them from a bandit attack. Grateful, Shōki takes the couple into his home: Yuria spends the last years of her life there alongside Kenshiro, in peace after the upheavals of the post-apocalyptic era. During this first encounter, Shōki refuses to reveal his true name to Kenshiro, fearing that they might one day be brought to face each other as enemies. This mutual debt seals a friendship between the two men that will resurface at the heart of the Capital arc.

The rebellion against Jakoh and death

When Jakoh seizes the Capital by taking Rui hostage and reducing Falco to his blackmail, Shōki attempts to assassinate the tyrant to free the Tentei. His attempt is foiled by Falco himself who, in order to save his life, strikes him in a way that places him in a state of apparent death, then encloses him in a shroud thrown into the river of corpses, hoping he could thus flee the capital. The subterfuge is uncovered: in the manga, it is Sheeno (シーノ), Jakoh's youngest son, who spots the deception and pierces Shōki with a spear; in the 1984 anime, this role is given to General Boltz of the Gento Kō Ken. Recovered by the Hokuto Army on the other bank, Shōki dies of his wounds, revealing to Kenshiro the truth about Jakoh's actions and asking him to put an end to the tyrant.

The General of the Red Light in the anime

While in the manga Shōki is never established as a practitioner of Gento Kō Ken, the 1984 anime expands his character by giving him the title of General of the Red Light (赤光, Sekkō). His face hidden by a helmet, he confronts Kenshiro to block the Hokuto Army's path to the capital. Kenshiro, sensing no murderous intent from his opponent, breaks the helmet and recognizes his old friend: Shōki then lets the Army pass and orders his subordinates not to oppose them, knowing that he is exposing himself to Jakoh's wrath.
