Shû (シュウ) is the successor of Nanto Hakurō Ken (南斗白鷺拳, "White Heron Fist of the South Star") and one of the six grand masters of Nanto Seiken. He bears the destiny of the Star of Benevolence (仁星, Jinsei), the one predestined to serve and protect the future generation. A former subordinate of Souther, he is the man who gouged out his own eyes to save a young Kenshiro whom he had just defeated, and who learned to see with his heart. His death, forced to carry the capstone of Souther's pyramid on his severed legs, is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the series.
When Kenshiro was still a child, Raoh brought him to the Nanto dojo to evaluate his potential during the Nanto Jūnin Kumite, a rite in which the child must defeat ten consecutive opponents or face death. Shū was at the time Souther's second-in-command and an elite Nanto fighter. He faced Kenshiro in the tenth and final position, defeated him with ease, and received Souther's order to execute him. But at the moment of delivering the fatal blow, he sensed the extraordinary potential of the child, and the Star of Benevolence awakened within him. Refusing to obey, he negotiated Kenshiro's life by tearing out his own eyes on the spot, as an offering. He carried the child out of the temple and, from that day on, learned to "see with the heart," a voluntary blindness that was also an inner transformation. This ability to perceive an opponent without sight would later allow him to use the secret technique Yūgen Shō (誘幻掌, the "Captivating Illusion Palm") against Kenshiro during their reunion in the manga.
After the nuclear war, Shû mounts a resistance against Souther, rescuing children from his slavery. When Kenshiro is defeated and imprisoned by Souther, Shû's son, Shiva, sacrifices his life to help him escape. Souther attacks the resistance camp in retaliation and takes one hundred women and children prisoner. He offers Shû a deal: surrender, or watch them be slaughtered. Shû surrenders. Souther severs the tendons of his legs to permanently strip him of the use of Nanto Hakurō Ken, then forces him to carry the heavy capstone of the pyramid to the summit. Shû dies as he sets the stone in place. In his final moments, his sight miraculously returns, and for the first and last time, he sees the adult Kenshiro. The pyramid will collapse after Souther's death, under the accumulated weight of Shû's blood and tears.
