Episode 13 of the Hokuto no Ken – Fist of the North Star 2026 anime, titled “A Bloody Trap”, has been available since Friday, June 19 on Prime Video. Kiba Daiō sets a cruel trap for Rei by capturing his sister Airi. Here is our verdict.
Episode Synopsis
Kiba Daiō, the leader of the Kiba clan, has discovered the whereabouts of Airi, the sister Rei has been searching for so long. He takes her hostage and, exploiting this weakness, attempts to manipulate Rei. Upon finally reuniting with his sister after all this time, Rei is devastated by how she has changed and loses control of himself. Faced with this despair, Kiba Daiō cannot hide his jubilation. Kenshiro desperately tries to calm Rei down, but the situation spirals toward tragedy…

Kiba Daiō’s Trap
This episode pushes Kiba Daiō’s cruelty to its peak, striking Rei where he is most vulnerable. By discovering the whereabouts of Airi, the sister the Nanto Suichō Ken warrior has been searching for so long, the leader of the Kiba clan finally has the means to manipulate him. The hostage-taking transforms a lifelong quest into a deadly trap, and the tyrant’s jubilation in the face of his enemy’s despair speaks volumes about his nature.
The dramatic heart of the episode lies in the reunion between Rei and Airi. Far from the happy images he may have nurtured, Rei discovers a sister profoundly changed by her ordeals, and this sight shakes him to the point of losing control. Faced with this distress, it falls to Kenshiro to serve as the safeguard: attempting to bring his companion back to reason before rage drives him to a fatal mistake. A pivotal episode that tests Rei’s self-control and further seals the bond between the two men.

Our Review
The episode opens with a striking scene, as Rei finds Airi, a prisoner of the Fangs clan. A sequence full of dramatic tension, where Nakamura Yūichi delivers a superb performance as Rei, supported by music that perfectly underscores the emotion. The soundtrack is a matter of debate, I know, but personally I see it as one of the series’ strengths. The themes from the classic anime obviously resonate much more deeply in my heart, but I find the new compositions well chosen. Technically, the character design in this scene is of very high quality.
We discover an Airi who has made herself blind, a consequence of the traumas she endured. Inagawa Eri delivers a fine performance, her very gentle voice fitting the character perfectly, whose design is also very well done. The scene where Rei throws Airi her blood-stained wedding veil is excellently rendered, once again carried by music that conveys all its emotional weight. That is when Kiba Daiō bursts in to interrupt the reunion between brother and sister. His entrance is well executed and the exchange between the protagonists is powerful, served by an excellent performance from Ichijō Kazuya, who excels in these kinds of moments. I also appreciated one detail: the episode avoids the inconsistent lighting effects that weighed down many previous episodes, maintaining the same color tone throughout.
Madara’s arrival is also very well done; his screams are spine-chilling and the character exudes a bestial power, while the backstory explaining his history works well. The scene where he attacks Kenshiro is very dynamic, his character design is convincing, and the resulting fight, though brief, proves excellent. This episode is overall very well directed, with few botched shots and well-managed CGI/2D transitions.
Then comes Mamiya’s intervention, as she attempts a bluff by posing as Kenshiro’s fiancée in order to surrender herself in exchange for Airi. But Kiba Daiō has sensed the trap, and the plan falls apart when Mamiya attacks him. We then discover the physical abilities of the Kiba master, whose body is as hard as metal thanks to his mastery of Kazan Kakutōgi. As with Kiba Daiō, I found Mamiya better rendered than in the two previous episodes, unless I have simply gotten used to her design… The following scene, where the henchmen “have fun” with the hostages, instills genuine unease, and the episode maintains tension throughout.
Rei offers to do whatever Kiba Daiō demands in order to free his sister. The Kiba master then orders him to kill the man of the North Star. The hour of the confrontation between the Nanto master and the Hokuto heir seems to have arrived, and the fight now appears inevitable. The episode closes on this cliffhanger, with a magnificent final shot.
An episode under constant tension, very well directed and faithful to the original manga. For me, the best episode of the series alongside the Renaissance Diabolique episode. In all likelihood, next week will mark the last episode before the summer break… and waiting for the continuation is going to be tough!
