6View all imagesSouten no Ken (蒼天の拳) is a manga by Tetsuo Hara (art) and Buronson (supervision), serialized in Shinchosha's Weekly Comic Bunch from May 29, 2001 to 2010 and collected in 22 volumes. A prequel to Hokuto no Ken, the series follows Kenshiro Kasumi, sixty-second successor of Hokuto Shinken, in 1930s Shanghai.
Shanghai, 1930s. The city, carved up into foreign concessions, lives under the thumb of secret societies vying for control of its streets. In Japan, Kenshiro Kasumi leads what appears to be the quiet life of a professor at a girls' university. But this nonchalant and whimsical man is also the sixty-second successor of Hokuto Shinken, and his past carries another name: Yan-Wang, the "King of Hell," who made the Shanghai underworld tremble. When he learns of the fate of his sworn friend Pan Guang-Lin, leader of the Qing Bang clan, Kenshiro returns to the city of evil to honor his word.
Back in Shanghai, he throws himself into the war between the Qing Bang and the Hong Hua Hui and finds Pan Yu-Ling, the woman he loves, now an amnesiac. Through successive confrontations, the series unfolds the secret history of the rival schools of Hokuto, the Hokuto Sonkaken, the Hokuto Sokaken and the Hokuto Ryukaken, against a backdrop of rising Sino-Japanese tensions and foreign power interference, all the way to the very origins of the divine fist of the Big Dipper.
Souten no Ken holds a special place in the editorial history of its authors. The series launched on May 29, 2001 in the very first issue of Weekly Comic Bunch, the magazine created by Shinchosha with Coamix, the structure founded by Tetsuo Hara, Buronson and their longstanding editor Nobuhiko Horie. The manga graced the cover of the launch issue and opened the magazine with color pages, sharing the role of flagship title with Angel Heart by Tsukasa Hojo. The colophon of the first volume, released on October 15, 2001, credits Tetsuo Hara as author and Buronson for supervision. The series concluded in 2010, shortly before the end of Weekly Comic Bunch itself, having accompanied the magazine throughout its entire existence.
The action takes place approximately seventy years before Hokuto no Ken. Kenshiro Kasumi precedes the Kenshiro of the year 199X by two generations, the latter receiving his first name as a tribute. The series explores the long history of the Hokuto lineage, its Chinese branches, and the rules of succession that would later resonate in the original work. Where Hokuto no Ken unfolds an imaginary post-apocalyptic world, Souten no Ken anchors its narrative in a real historical setting: the pre-war Shanghai, its concessions, its triads, and the march toward the Sino-Japanese conflict.
The manga was adapted into an animated series of 26 episodes, broadcast from October 2006 to March 2007 in Japan. A direct sequel, Souten no Ken Regenesis, was published in Monthly Comic Zenon (North Stars Pictures) from October 2017 to September 2025, drawn by Hideki Tsuji with a script by Hiroyuki Yatsu, Tetsuo Hara being credited for the original work. Regenesis itself received a CGI animated adaptation broadcast in 2018.

Souten no Ken was serialized in Shinchosha's Weekly Comic Bunch, from the inaugural issue of May 29, 2001 until 2010, then collected into 22 volumes under the Bunch Comics label. The series is now managed by Coamix, the rights holder, which offers it in both print and digital formats, and it received a Kazenban re-edition in 14 volumes under the Zenon Comics label.
In France, the work was first published by Panini Comics in the Génération Comics collection under the title Ken, Fist of the Blue Sky, in 22 volumes starting in 2004, translated by Xavière Daumarie. Mangetsu acquired the rights and has been re-releasing the series under its original title, Sôten no Ken, since October 6, 2021, in 14 volumes, translated by Odilon Grevet (volumes 1 to 9) and then by Marie-Saskia Raynal.
