Souten no Ken Regenesis (Anime)

Souten no Ken Regenesis is a CGI animated television series produced by studio Polygon Pictures, broadcast in two seasons of twelve episodes, from April 2, to December 17, 2018. A sequel to the 2006 anime, it is directed by Kazumi Akio, with a screenplay by Ozaki Satoshi.

Synopsis

After the upheavals in the world of Shanghai's secret societies in 193X, the world slides toward the Second World War. Kasumi Kenshiro, sixty-second successor of Hokuto Shinken, is once again swept up in the whirlwind of history. Around the List of Hope held by the young Erika Arendt, covetous desires awaken, from the French and German armies to the powers preparing to tear each other apart. Guided by the destiny of Hokuto, Kenshiro faces the masters of rival schools, the Seito Getsuken and then the Tento Seiinken, before traveling to the Dutch East Indies, present-day Indonesia, where the ultimate battle of his life as successor awaits him.

A CGI sequel

Twelve years after the 2006 anime, produced in traditional animation, Regenesis takes a radically different approach. The series is entirely produced in CGI by Polygon Pictures, a studio renowned for its expertise in 3DCG. Its first season adapts, in an abridged form, the Liu Fei-Yan and Yasaka arcs from the original manga, leaving out the Liu Zongwu arc. Its second season takes Kenshiro to the Dutch East Indies and ties into the Souten no Ken Regenesis manga by Hideki Tsuji, which was being published concurrently at the time, but it takes such liberties, cutting characters and entire arcs, that it essentially constitutes an alternate story with its own protagonists.

A carefully crafted musical production

The music for the series is entrusted to Nishimura Masato, a member of the group FENCE OF DEFENSE. Each season features its own opening and ending themes. The first season opens with "Souten no Hate ni" performed by AK-69 and closes with "Inori no Hoshizora" by Sumire Uesaka. The second season opens with "Soul Seeker" by Crossfaith and closes with "Kono Sora wo Subete Kimi ni" by Hiroya Ozaki.
