Jagi (ジャギ) is one of the four adopted disciples of Ryuken within the Hokuto Shinken school. Adopted brother of Kenshiro, Raoh and Toki, he harbored from an early age a deep resentment toward the official successor of the Hokuto school. Unable to accept his master's decision, he chose to pervert the teachings of Hokuto Shinken for criminal purposes and became one of the cruelest adversaries encountered by Kenshiro at the beginning of his journey through the wastelands ravaged by nuclear war.
During his training under Ryuken, Jagi is one of the four potential heirs of Hokuto Shinken. Unlike Toki, whose mastery relies on precision, or Raoh, who develops overwhelming power, Jagi remains inferior to his training brothers in terms of martial ability. He nonetheless covets the title of successor, and when Ryuken chooses Kenshiro, he refuses to accept this decision and develops a lasting hatred for his younger brother.
After Kenshiro's designation, Jagi attempts to assassinate him with his sawed-off shotgun. Kenshiro defeats him without killing him but disfigures his face in the process. This injury subsequently forces him to wear a metal helmet to conceal his deformed skull.
Unable to rival his adoptive brother, Jagi decides to usurp his identity to spread terror across the desert. He passes himself off as the successor of Hokuto Shinken, commits numerous massacres to tarnish the reputation of the true heir, and inflicts seven scars on his own chest to perfect the imposture. The deception works: Kenshiro is already feared and hunted in regions where he has never set foot.
Jagi also manipulates Shin, heir of Nanto Kōshū Ken, by fueling his jealousy toward Kenshiro. It is he who pushes Shin to abduct Yuria and attack Kenshiro to take her from him. Later, disguised as Kenshiro, he abducts Airi on her wedding day and forces her into slavery, triggering the vengeful quest of her brother Rei, the Star of Justice.
Although he has mastered certain Hokuto Shinken techniques, Jagi compensates for his martial limitations through underhanded methods. Unlike the other disciples of Ryuken, he uses firearms, explosives, and traps. His equipment notably includes a sawed-off shotgun and various metal protections that reinforce his intimidating appearance.
Jagi uses Hokuto Shinken pressure points in a brutal and imprecise manner. His style favors suffering and intimidation over pure technical mastery. This approach stands in stark contrast to the traditional philosophy of the school, which is normally dedicated to the protection of the weak.
When Kenshiro discovers that Jagi is using his name to commit atrocities, he sets out to find him. Their confrontation exposes all the hatred Jagi has harbored since their youth. Unable to match the power of the true successor, he resorts to every trick possible, from explosives to surprise attacks.
Despite these stratagems, Kenshiro dominates the fight. Cornered, Jagi tries one last time to deceive his opponent, but he is defeated by Hokuto Shinken. Before the fatal blow, Kenshiro inflicts the Seiei Kō (醒鋭孔) on him, a secret technique that makes every part of his body hypersensitive to pain, as retribution for Yuria, before making his head explode with a strike to the skull. In his final moments, Jagi reveals to Kenshiro that Toki and Raoh are still alive, sending the successor of Hokuto on the trail of his two other brothers.
The spin-off Hokuto no Ken Jagi Gaiden - Gokuaku no Hana (北斗の拳 ジャギ外伝 極悪ノ華, "The Flower of Evil"), written and drawn by Sin-ichi Hiromoto and published in Weekly Comic Bunch from December 2008 to August 2009, traces the life of Jagi before and during his appearances in the original manga. The series develops the character's motivations, his relationship with his brothers and his journey from his adoption by Ryuken to his inevitable downfall. It also features his only true human connections: his relationship with Anna and Boss in the biker gang that took him in after he fled the dojo. This gaiden helped add nuance to the character in the eyes of part of the audience: without absolving his crimes, it humanizes the origins of his hatred.
