Mad Sarge (マッド軍曹サージ), sometimes called Mad Sergeant, is the military instructor of the Golan organization and the Colonel's adjutant during the God's Cross arc. A former member of the Red Berets, an elite pre-war special force, he claims to have killed over a thousand guerrilla fighters in combat and imposes on his recruits a discipline founded on fear, mutilation, and pure sadism.
Before the nuclear war of 199X, Mad Sarge served in the Red Berets, a special forces unit from the same nation as the Colonel. Originally a fanatical patriot, he lost all faith in his country after his own generals triggered the apocalypse, and transferred his loyalty to his former superior, who had become the founder of Golan.
A miraculous survivor of the nuclear eschaton along with his company, Mad Sarge interpreted this survival as a sign of divine election. He became the Colonel's operational right-hand man and established himself as the chief instructor of the training camp in the Land of God, where Golan recruits were prepared.
Mad Sarge embodies the drill sergeant in all his intransigence: brutal and devoid of empathy, he pushes his recruits to kill each other during exercises rather than train on targets. He personally executes those he deems weak or hesitant, and does not hesitate to mutilate others as an example. His reputation as a bloodthirsty veteran casts a permanent terror over the camp, where his mere appearance is enough to impose silence.
This extreme discipline serves the Golan's project: to shape a generation of cold-blooded killers destined to establish the Land of God, after the elimination of populations deemed unworthy. Mad Sarge carries out the program with pathological zeal.
Mad Sarge's arsenal makes him a formidable fighter. He wields two Bowie Knives that he chains together at a prodigious rate of ten strikes per second, capable of slashing an opponent before they have time to react. He also uses special needles in the form of hollow steel tubes, the blood-sucking needles: driven into the victim's flesh, they drain the blood and let it spray outward.
In the original animated version, his blades are additionally coated with scorpion venom to make the slightest cut lethal. His speed, his experience from pre-apocalyptic wars, and the diversity of his equipment make him an opponent on a completely different level than the henchmen usually encountered by Kenshiro.
When Kenshiro infiltrates the Golan training camp to free Rin and the other prisoners, Mad Sarge intervenes personally, convinced that his Bowie Knives will bring down the successor of Hokuto just like all the others before him.
The instructor unleashes his ten strikes per second and his needles, and manages to hit Kenshiro. But the Hokuto Shinken turns the situation around: Kenshiro neutralizes Mad Sarge's techniques, turns his own blades against him, and kills him in just a few exchanges. The instructor's defeat directly opens the way to the final duel against the Colonel, in the main chamber of God's Land.
Mad Sarge appears in the corresponding chapters of the manga, in the original animated series (1984), where he is voiced by Yasuo Tanaka, and in several derivative video games including Hokuto no Ken for Sega Mark III, where he serves as the second sub-boss of chapter 2. The English dub of the series is performed by Jamieson Price.
In the 2026 anime, the character was introduced in episode 7 aired on May 9, 2026, where he is voiced by Jirō Saitō. Mad Sarge's original design was inspired for the manga's character designer by Sergeant Major Tudor Bryn "Shut Up" Williams, one of the iconic characters from the British sitcom It Ain't Half Hot Mum broadcast by the BBC in the 1970s.
