Sakuya
Sakuya (サクヤ) is one of the central characters in Hokuto no Ken: Raoh Gaiden - Ten no Haoh, primarily known from the 2008 anime adaptation but originally introduced in a special manga chapter published as a supplement to the television broadcast. An enigmatic woman who joins Raoh's army as a second strategist alongside Sōga, she actually conceals her true identity: sister of Gaiya, master of Kokuzan Ongyō Ken (黒山陰形拳, Fist of the Hidden Form of the Black Mountain), a martial art that renders its practitioner invisible to the opponent's eyes.
Hidden identity and character creation
Sakuya replaces in the anime the narrative roles held in the original manga by Usa, Raoh's vice-strategist, and by Isabella, prisoner of Yuda, condensing several functions into a single fully-fledged character. Supervisor Nobuhiko Horie directed her addition to expand the feminine dimension of the story beyond Reina, and introduced her as an enigma: who really is this woman who presents herself under that name?
Her secret lies in her lineage and martial school. Sister of Gaiya, the true infiltrated mastermind behind the apparent power of several rival warlords, Sakuya practices Kokuzan Ongyō Ken, a style that relies on total concealment and sudden appearance, giving its user apparent invisibility in combat.
Strategist in the Ken-Oh army
In Raoh's service, Sakuya quickly establishes her dual mastery of military strategy and combat. Thanks to her, the Ken-Oh army overthrows several major adversaries, including Gaoh and then Jadam: the latter, capable of transforming his body into steel through the Gentetsu Ken, has just blinded Ryuga with a needle technique when Sakuya eliminates him by exploiting the openings that her invisibility allows her to create. Discreetly, she also travels to Cassandra to visit Toki, with whom she maintains regular exchanges to keep the imprisoned brother informed of the progress of Raoh and Kenshiro, with only Reina as her accomplice.
Souther's trap and imprisonment in Cassandra
Sakuya's reputation eventually attracted the attention of Souther, who sought her allegiance. She declined out of love for Raoh, but was later seen leaving the Holy Emperor's quarters, which was enough to arouse the suspicions of Ken-Oh. Raoh had her imprisoned in Cassandra as a suspected traitor, and it was during this detention that her true identity as Gaiya's sister and her mastery of the Kokuzan Ongyō Ken were revealed. She ultimately earned her freedom to defend Raoh's headquarters alongside Reina, when Yuda launched his assault in Ken-Oh's absence.
The final sacrifice: love and sadness
At the climax of the story, Raoh confronts Souther in a duel that threatens to destroy everything around them. It is Sakuya who chooses to put an end to this battle through her own sacrifice. Before dying, she delivers the diagnosis that constitutes the thematic key of Ten no Haoh: no matter how powerful he may be, Souther can never become the true sovereign as long as he refuses love, and Raoh cannot either as long as he has not embraced sadness. Implicitly, Sakuya points to Kenshiro, who possesses both qualities, as the man whose primacy Raoh will one day have to acknowledge.
Voice acting
In the anime Ten no Haoh (2008), Sakuya is voiced by Akiko Kimura.
