Yuria (ユリア), sometimes transcribed Julia, is one of the central characters of Hokuto no Ken and the fiancée of Kenshiro. Initially presented as the abducted young woman whom the successor of Hokuto Shinken travels the devastated lands to find, she is revealed to be the direct descendant of the sacred lineage of the Nanto Seitō Kettō (南斗正統血統) and the last general of Nanto, whose Star of the Merciful Mother (慈母星, Jibosei) constitutes the sixth and final star of the Nanto Rokuseiken. Loved by Shin, Raoh, Toki and her own half-brother Jūza, her tragic destiny structures the entirety of the first part of the manga. She is voiced by Yuriko Yamamoto in the 1984 series and by Saori Hayami in the new animated adaptation of 2026.
Yuria was born into the sacred lineage of the Nanto Seitō Kettō (南斗正統血統, "the Legitimate Bloodline of Nanto"), reserved for the sixth star of the Nanto Rokuseiken. This star, the Jibosei (慈母星, "Star of the Merciful Mother"), manifests when the five other stars of Nanto descend into chaos: its bearer possesses a unique empathic charisma, capable of healing the hearts of men and uniting peoples through compassion rather than violence.
This star, however, confers no martial ability. Yuria is not a fighter: her physical protection is entrusted to the Nanto Goshasei (南斗五車星), the Five Chariot Stars, sworn to defend her at the cost of their lives. The traditional role of the last general is to unite with Hokuto to restore order amid the chaos of Nanto, which she accomplishes by commanding the Goshasei to attack Raoh and by guiding Kenshiro in his final battle.
Yuria grew up in a broken family. Her father is also the father of Jūza of the Clouds, making the latter her half-brother, born from a previous relationship their father had with another woman. Her elder brother Ryuga, star of Sirius (天狼星, Tenrōsei), would also share her tragic destiny. This fragmented family gave Yuria an early understanding of human suffering and nurtured her empathic ability.
The OAV Yuria Den (ユリア伝, 2007), the first part of the Shin Kyūseishu Densetsu pentalogy, recounts this childhood and the fateful encounter with a young Kenshiro, marked by the presence of Tobi, the dog Yuria saves and who becomes a silent witness to their budding love.
Before the nuclear war, Yuria meets Kenshiro, a young disciple destined to become the 64th successor of Hokuto Shinken. Their love is immediate and leads to an engagement. But other suitors also harbor feelings for her: Raoh, the eldest of the Hokuto brothers, who projects onto her his unfulfilled need for a mother; Toki, who admires her in silence; Shin, successor of Nanto Koshū Ken and friend of Kenshiro, whose love remains unspoken until he is corrupted by Jagi.
One year before the main events, Jagi manipulates Shin into challenging Kenshiro. Defeated, Kenshiro receives the seven Big Dipper-shaped scars on his chest. To save the life of the Hokuto Shinken successor left for dead, Yuria agrees to swear her love to Shin and follow him to Southern Cross, the city he builds in her name.
At Southern Cross, however, Yuria refuses to give in to Shin despite the tyrant's extravagant attentions. Witnessing the atrocities committed by KING's men in the name of a love she does not share, she ultimately throws herself from the top of the palace. But her fall is secretly broken by the Nanto Goshasei, who save her and reveal her true identity. To the world, and especially to Kenshiro, Yuria is now dead.
Hidden by the Nanto Goshasei in the Capital of Nanto, Yuria dons the armor of the Last General. Behind the helmet concealing her face, she commands the resistance against Raoh, orders the Goshasei to fall one by one to slow the advance of Ken-Oh, and sends Fudō to find Kenshiro, who has withdrawn to Toki's grave.
This period is also that of her struggle against illness: Yuria was irradiated during the nuclear war and suffers from the same disease consuming Toki. The physician of Nanto informs her that she has only a few months left, making every strategic decision all the more weighty.
When Raoh and Kenshiro learn almost simultaneously the identity of the Last General, they converge on the Capital of Nanto. Raoh arrives first. After Tō attempted to impersonate Yuria and took her own life before him, the Ken-Oh finds the true Yuria and takes her to his palace.
There, he discovers the young woman's illness. Refusing to see her die before the final battle, Raoh uses a Hokuto Shinken technique to plunge Yuria into a state of apparent death, then carries her body to the Hokuto Renkitōza (北斗練気闘座) to serve as bait for Kenshiro. This staging triggers within Kenshiro the awakening of the Musō Tensei (無想転生), the ultimate technique born from loss.
At the conclusion of the final duel between Raoh and Kenshiro, Ken-Oh, defeated and on the threshold of death, performs one last act of reconciliation. Before dying, Raoh presses a vital point of Hokuto Shinken on the sleeping Yuria to extend her life by a few years, transforming the months she had left into several seasons shared with the man she loves.
Yuria awakens in Kenshiro's arms after Raoh's death, and the two leave the battlefield to live peacefully far from conflict. This retreat spans the time gap separating the first and second parts of the manga, during which Yuria ultimately dies of her illness under circumstances that Kenshiro rarely mentions afterward.
Yuria is the heroine of the manga Jibo no Hoshi - Hokuto no Ken : Yuria Gaiden (慈母の星 北斗の拳 ユリア外伝, "the Star of the Merciful Mother") published in 2006-2007 by Akimi Kasai in Comic Bunch. The story, collected in a single volume, features a shōjo art style that is decidedly more slender and refined than that of the original manga, and gives Yuria an additional gift: premonition. The volume explores her childhood, her encounter with Shin, and the love triangle she forms with her half-brother Jūza.
The OAV Yuria Den (ユリア伝, 2007), produced for the Shin Kyūseishu Densetsu pentalogy, extends this story up to the death of Souther, adding the dog Tobi and the encounter with Rei (his only appearance in the sub-series).
In Zero Kenshirō Den (ZERO ケンシロウ伝, 2008), the final installment of the Shin Kyūseishu Densetsu pentalogy, it is strongly suggested that Yuria is pregnant with Kenshiro's child, which would make the successor of Hokuto a father in this continuity.
Yuria is voiced by Yuriko Yamamoto in the original animated series (1984-1988) and the 1986 film, by Yuriko Ishida in the Shin Kyūseishu Densetsu pentalogy (2006-2008), and by Saori Hayami in the new animated adaptation of 2026. Actress Isako Washio portrays her in the 1995 live-action film and provides her voice in the Japanese dub. The character ranks among the most iconic heroines of 1980s shōnen, and her silhouette in a white dress with auburn hair (sometimes rendered as platinum blonde depending on the adaptation) has become an immediately recognizable icon of the franchise.
