Tô

Tō (トウ) is the only daughter of Rihaku of the Ocean and the personal attendant of Yuria, the last general of Nanto. In love with Raoh since childhood, she sacrifices herself before Ken-Oh in the throne room of Nanto by stabbing herself with his dagger, hoping to engrave her memory in the heart of the man she loves. She is voiced by Sumi Shimamoto (the voice of Nausicaä and Kyōko in Maison Ikkoku).

Daughter of the Nanto Goshasei strategist

Tō grew up alongside Yuria in the capital of Nanto, where her father Rihaku serves as the mastermind of the Nanto Goshasei. Having become an attendant to the last general, she witnesses from within the defense organized against the advance of Raoh's armies, and the fall, one after another, of the Stars of the Chariot she had known her entire life.

According to the expansion provided by the animated series, Tō had been saved as a child from a pack of wolves by Raoh himself, at a time when the future Ken-Oh was still just a young disciple of Hokuto Shinken. This life debt seals her secret love for him, which only deepens over the years. The anime also adds a poignant scene in which Tō, as a child, tries to console Raoh after a painful defeat at the hands of Ryuken during training, only to be pushed away by a young King of the Fist already in love with Yuria.

The trap set for Jūza (anime)

Also in the animated version, Tō plays a discreet strategic role before the final siege. She is the one who infiltrates the lair of the carouser Jūza by posing as a servant, seduces him, drugs his drink and thus allows Yuria to come retrieve him while he is asleep and bring him back to the Goshasei. Jūza, upon waking, calls this stratagem a "dirty trick," but cannot help admiring her nerve.

The secret love for Raoh

Tō harbors a love for Raoh that she has known since childhood to be impossible. She understands that Ken-Oh only has eyes for Yuria, the love of his youth whom he believes dead and who turns out to be the last general of Nanto. This one-sided love fosters in Tō an intimate reflection on what Raoh truly seeks: not the woman he claims to love, but the Star of the Merciful Mother (慈母星, Jibosei) that Yuria embodies and that Raoh, orphaned at a young age, never had.

The sacrifice in the throne room

When Raoh enters the Nanto palace to seize the last general, it is Tō who presents herself to him wearing Yuria's ceremonial armor, in a final attempt to deceive Ken-Oh and allow Yuria to flee with Kenshiro. Raoh, who has known Yuria since childhood, immediately sees through the deception.

Unmasked, Tō does not give up. She openly declares her love to Raoh and tells him that she has understood the true nature of his quest: it is not Yuria he seeks, but a mother he never had. Faced with Ken-Oh's silence, she then seizes the dagger hanging from Raoh's belt, turns it against herself, and plunges it into her own heart, convinced that dying by his own weapon will be enough to engrave her memory in the conqueror's mind.

Raoh's contempt

The sacrifice does not produce the intended effect. Raoh steps over the body without shedding a tear and coldly declares that if Tō had truly loved him, she should have tried to kill him so that no other woman could have him. This chilling response reflects the deep alienation in which the Ken-Oh finds himself at that point, but it is not enough to erase the young woman's act. In the anime, Tō's act differs slightly from the manga: she hesitates for a few seconds, even considers stabbing Raoh before turning the blade on herself, adding a layer of psychological complexity to the scene (canon specified by RQ87).

For Rihaku, a direct witness to his daughter's death, this tragedy marks the hardest personal collapse of the Goshasei arc. For Raoh, it will be one of the many cracks that, combined with the imminent death of Yuria, will ultimately shatter his armor during the final battle against Kenshiro.

Theory on the mother of Ryū

According to the official guide Hokuto no Ken 2000 : Kyūkyoku Kaisetsusho Part 2, Tō is among the most frequently cited candidates for the identity of the mother of Ryū, the orphaned son of Raoh later taken in by Kenshiro. This hypothesis, never confirmed by the authors Buronson and Tetsuo Hara, is based on the significance of Tō's secret love and the absence of any other explicit candidate. It appears alongside theories involving Reina, Sakuya, or an anonymous concubine.
