Rihaku

Rihaku (リハク), known as Rihaku of the Ocean (海のリハク, Umi no Rihaku), is the leader and military strategist of the Nanto Goshasei, the Five Chariot Stars tasked with protecting the Last General of Nanto. Representing the element of Sea (海, Kai), he opposes Raoh through traps and tactical intelligence rather than brute martial force. Father of Tō, he is the sole survivor of the Goshasei and later becomes the senior strategist of the Hokuto Army led by Bat and Rin.

The strategist of the Nanto Goshasei

Rihaku is the oldest member and commander-in-chief of the Nanto Goshasei, the five sworn protectors of the Last Nanto General. Alongside Huey of the Wind, Shuren of the Flame, Jūza of the Clouds and Fudō of the Mountain, he represents the Sea element in the constellation of the Charioteer (馭者座, Gyoshaza) that inspires the Goshasei.

Where his four companions are elite individual fighters, Rihaku stands out through his tactical genius and encyclopedic knowledge of martial arts schools. According to canon sources, he has mastered not only the history and techniques of Hokuto Shinken and Nanto Seiken, but also the secret schools of Gentō Kōken and even those of the Land of Shura, making him one of the most learned men on the post-apocalyptic planet.

The Defense of the Nanto Capital

When Raoh launches his final offensive on the Nanto Capital to seize the Last General, Rihaku devises a complex network of traps designed to slow the advance of Ken-Oh. Booby-trapped walls, explosive floors, pitfalls, and concealed mechanisms saturate the palace grounds. None of the devices prove sufficient to stop Raoh, but one of them forces him to retreat during his first duel against Kenshiro, as the collapse of a room separates the two rival brothers and allows Raoh to abduct Yuria.

Rihaku watches helplessly as his companions fall, one after another. His strategic calculations shatter against the raw power of Raoh's Hokuto Shinken, and he ultimately breaks down in tears, offering his apologies to Kenshiro for his failure to protect the Last General.

The death of Tō

Rihaku's personal tragedy is the loss of his daughter Tō. A handmaiden of Yuria, Tō has been in love since childhood with Raoh, who had saved her as a child from a pack of wolves. To allow Yuria to escape, she disguises herself as the Last General of Nanto and attempts to deceive Raoh.

Unmasked, she declares her love to Ken-Oh, hoping to divert his attention. Faced with his rejection, Tō seizes Raoh's dagger from his belt and plunges it into her own heart, convinced that her sacrifice will engrave her memory in the mind of the man she loves. Raoh steps over her body with contempt, declaring that she should have tried to kill him instead if she truly loved him. This death, which Rihaku witnesses, is one of the deepest scars borne by the old strategist.

Direct confrontation against Raoh and survival

Cornered after the death of all his companions and the abduction of Yuria, Rihaku attempts an uneven duel against Raoh himself. In the original animated version, this fight gives him the opportunity to deploy his own martial style, the Gosha Hasui Ken (五車波砕拳, the Fist of the Chariot that Shatters the Waves), an aerial striking art that reproduces the force of an undertow. This technique, absent from the manga where Rihaku remains a pure strategist, is nevertheless not enough to threaten Raoh.

Rihaku is saved at the last moment by the arrival of Kenshiro, who then discovers the palace in a bloodbath. He thus becomes the sole survivor of the Nanto Goshasei and the direct witness of the awakening of Musō Tensei in Kenshiro, the ultimate technique born from the pain of Yuria's imminent loss.

Strategist of the Hokuto Army

After the death of Raoh and the end of the Hokuto war, Rihaku spends the following years accompanying the survivors. In the second part of Hokuto no Ken, he is found alongside Bat and Rin, now adults, serving as senior strategist and advisor to the Hokuto Army, which opposes Jakoh and the Celestial Empire regime.

Now hunched over a cane, his physical abilities diminished, Rihaku puts his encyclopedic knowledge of the martial schools at the service of the new generation. He is the one who enlightens Falco and Kenshiro on the secrets of Gentō Kōken, and who guides the Hokuto fleet toward the Land of Shura in search of Rin, who was abducted by Jakoh.

Voice acting and appearances

In the original animated series (1984-1988), Rihaku is voiced by Takeshi Aono. In the Shin Kyūseishu Densetsu film trilogy, he is portrayed by Katsuhisa Houki. In the comedic spin-off DD Hokuto no Ken, his austere silhouette and superior intellect are regularly subverted for parodic purposes.
