On December 10, 2025, during an online event titled “The 2026 Evo Announcement Show,” the Evolution Championship Series unveiled the complete list of 12 titles selected for the main tournament at EVO Japan 2026. Alongside Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, Guilty Gear Strive, and Fatal Fury City of the Wolves, one title immediately caught everyone’s attention: Hokuto no Ken, the arcade game released in 2005 and developed by Arc System Works.
This is the first time Hokuto no Ken has been selected as a main tournament title at EVO Japan. Until now, community-run tournaments had been organized on the sidelines of the event by passionate fans, but the game had never joined the official stage. Hokuto no Ken arcade: a legendary game
The Hokuto no Ken arcade game was released in 2005 on the Atomiswave cabinet developed by Sammy, under license from Coamix. Arc System Works, specialists in 2D fighting games (Guilty Gear, BlazBlue), handled the development. The game features the iconic characters from the manga: Kenshiro, Raoh, Shin, Rei, Toki, Jagi, Mamiya, and others.
At launch, the game was considered unbalanced due to ultra-powerful techniques, infinite combos, and an ultimate technique capable of eliminating the opponent in a single sequence. But years of in-depth research by the community ultimately demonstrated that each character possesses sufficient tools to turn around any situation.
Why this selection is causing a sensation
The presence of Hokuto no Ken in the main tournament at EVO Japan 2026 is no trivial matter. EVO Japan has traditionally mixed modern titles with classics, but selecting a 2005 game still played on original arcade cabinets sends a strong signal to the competitive scene. The organizers specified that matches will be played on authentic arcade cabinets, recreating the atmosphere of Japanese arcades from that era.
