Shin Hokuto no Ken OAV 3, The Full Weight of Compassion (慈悲の重み)

OAV 3 of Shin Hokuto no Ken, titled “The Full Weight of Compassion” (慈悲の重み), was released in Japan on May 28, 2004, concluding a trilogy that began nearly a year earlier. Directed by Takashi Watanabe, it wraps up the adaptation of the novel Jubaku no Machi by Buronson and Tetsuo Hara.

The title of this final episode explicitly carries the interpretive key that Buronson has claimed for the entire franchise: “love and compassion are more powerful than violence”. The conclusion sees Kenshiro confront both Tobi, who has become the rebel high priest of Lastland, and Seiji, a disciple of the Hokumon, in a final showdown that seals Bista’s fate and restores peace to Lastland.

Official Summary

Leaving behind the Clifflands and the sacred temple of the Hokumon no Ken sentinels, Kenshiro returns to Lastland to bring Bista the remedy he needs to recover from tetanus. But the besieged city is now engulfed in fire and blood, ravaged by the relentless fighting between the followers of the god Doha and the henchmen of Seiji, entrenched in their stone fortress. It is Tobi who leads this bloody rebellion. He loudly proclaims his divine calling, boasting of being the new high priest of the citadel. And to establish his new divine order, he will not hesitate to unleash a terrible holy war that will drown the enclave in tears and blood.
