Rei (レイ) is the successor of Nanto Suichōken and one of Kenshiro's closest allies during the first part of Hokuto no Ken. Representing the Star of Justice (義星, Gisei) among the six stars of the Nanto Rokuseiken, he is considered the most elegant of the Nanto fighters. His quest to find his sister Airi and his tragic end at the hands of Raoh make him one of the most beloved characters in the manga.
Rei is the successor of Nanto Suichōken (南斗水鳥拳, Fist of the Waterfowl of the South), one of the six supreme styles of Nanto Seiken. The art relies on slashing strikes delivered with the edges of the hands, aerial movements of extreme fluidity reminiscent of the flight of a waterfowl, and great precision targeting vital points. According to several masters, it is the most elegant style in the entire Nanto galaxy.
In the heavens of the Nanto Rokuseiken, Rei embodies the Star of Justice (Gisei), alongside Shin (Star of Martyrdom, 殉星), Yuda (Star of Enchantment, 妖星), Shū (Star of Benevolence, 仁星), Souther (Star of Leadership, 将星), and Yuria (Star of the Compassionate Mother, 慈母星). This stellar destiny is summed up in his own creed: The Star of Justice lives for others and dies for others.
Before the main events of the series, Rei is on a training journey when his family is massacred and his sister Airi, who is about to be married, is kidnapped. The culprit, a man bearing seven scars in the shape of the Big Dipper on his chest, is none other than Jagi, who usurps the identity of Kenshiro to tarnish his reputation.
Stripped of her speech and sight by the trauma, Airi is then sold as a slave and ends up in the hands of the Kiba clan. Rei spends several years searching for her across the devastated lands, fueling a fierce hatred toward the man with seven scars, whom he believes to be Kenshiro.
Rei challenges Kenshiro to a duel upon their very first meeting, believing he has found the man who destroyed his family. The fight quickly reveals that Kenshiro is no assassin: he refuses to kill Rei and demonstrates that the seven scars alone are not enough to identify a culprit. Faced with a fighter who harbors no murderous intent toward him, Rei realizes he was mistaken.
The friendship between the two masters forms rapidly. Kenshiro helps Rei find Airi at the Kibas' hideout, and restores the young woman's voice and then her sight through the pressure points of Hokuto Shinken. From that moment on, Rei swears to fight alongside the successor of Hokuto.
Rei joins Kenshiro at Mamiya's village, where she has hired them as mercenaries to defend the community against attacks from the Kiba clan. Rei falls in love with Mamiya, gradually discovering her shattered past: abducted by Yuda on the day she turned twenty, she bears the mark UD on her back.
The appearance of this mark transforms Rei's personal mission: Yuda now becomes his designated target, driven both by the longstanding rivalry between the two Nanto practitioners and by the desire to avenge Mamiya's honor.
When Raoh attacks Mamiya's village in retaliation for the liberation of Toki, Rei stands alone against Ken-Oh to protect his friends. He unleashes his most cutting techniques, including the Danko Sōsai Ken. But Raoh, gifted with precognition, anticipates the blow, throws his cape to distract Rei, and strikes his vital point Shinketsushū (新血愁): the master of Nanto Suichōken is now condemned to die within three days, his body set to explode from the inside.
Rei, mortally wounded, is brought back to the village. Raoh, who respected his courage, deliberately chose a delayed vital point: Rei is granted a three-day reprieve to settle his final affairs.
Rei chose to devote his final days to avenging Mamiya. Toki then pressed the vital point Shinreidai (心霊台) on his skull to grant him one additional day, at the cost of tenfold suffering. Rei's hair turned white as a result.
At Yuda's hideout, Rei confronted Yuda, his former rival who was jealous of his beauty and talent. Yuda flooded the battlefield to neutralize the aerial agility of the Nanto Suichōken, but Kenshiro's intervention against Yuda's henchmen allowed Rei to regain his footing. Before dying, Yuda acknowledged Rei's superiority and confessed to him, with his last breath, the admiration he had held for him since their youth.
Rei returns to Mamiya's village and dies in her arms shortly after. His final canonical words sum up his entire life: The Star of Justice lives for others and dies for others. I have no regrets. Ken, Rin, Bat, Toki, Airi... Mamiya... Before his last breath, he asks Mamiya to abandon her life as a warrior and rediscover her femininity, a wish she will honor.
Rei's funeral pyre marks one of the most poignant moments in the manga, and the death of this Star of Justice is cited as one of the emotional peaks of the entire franchise.
The story of Rei before his encounter with Kenshiro is developed in the spin-off manga Sōkoku no Garō : Hokuto no Ken Rei Gaiden (蒼黒の餓狼, the Blue-Black Hungry Wolf), drawn by Yasuyuki Nekoi with a scenario by Buronson and Tetsuo Hara, serialized in Weekly Comic Bunch between April 2007 and July 2009 (6 volumes, 54 chapters). The work follows Rei's solitary quest across the devastated lands to find Airi, his confrontations with various warlords, and the psychological evolution of a man consumed by hatred before he finds, through Mamiya and Kenshiro, a reason to live beyond vengeance.
Rei is voiced by Kaneto Shiozawa in the original animated series (1984-1986) and the 1986 film, and by Shin'ichirō Miki in the OAV Yuria Den. In the 2026 anime, the role is taken over by Yūichi Nakamura. The character also appears in nearly all video games derived from the franchise. His totemic animal, the waterbird, has inspired a long line of collectible figures from Medicom, SpiceSeed, and Prime 1 Studio.
