Shuken

Shuken (シュケン) is the legendary founder of Hokuto Shinken, revealed late in Hokuto no Ken as the direct common ancestor of Kenshiro and Hyoh. Born of the Hokuto Sōke (北斗宗家) lineage, whose transmission he ensured through his own survival, approximately 1,800 years ago he merged the ancestral art of his family with the vital point techniques of the Yuezhi people to give birth to the definitive school of Hokuto Shinken, and laid the foundations for its transmission through a single successor.

Origins: the miracle of the Kōtendai

Shuken is born on the same day as his cousin Ryūō, son of Ouka, within the Hokuto Sōke clan, which at the time had no male heir. His mother Shume, already mortally ill, is unable to nurse him, and it is his aunt Ouka who takes charge of both infants.

Faced with the ominous portent of this double birth, the Hokuto priests place the two children on the sacred plateau of the Kōtendai, exposed to wolves: only the survivor will become the legitimate heir. Shume manages to steal Shuken away from the wolves during the night, but she is caught by the priests and then reveals her incurable illness. Ouka, deeply shaken, demands that Shuken be recognized as successor and sacrifices herself by throwing herself from the cliff to sway the priests. Raised in the memory of these two women, Shuken becomes the sole recognized heir of the Hokuto Sōke, and the love he received from his mother and his aunt will form the philosophical foundation of the art he will later create.

Learning Seito Gekken

In adulthood, Shuken is sent to study under the disciples of Seito Gekken (西斗月拳, "Fist of the Moon of the Western Star"), a martial art practiced by the Yuezhi people who mastered the techniques of Keiraku Hikō (経絡秘孔), the 708 secret vital points of the human body. Admitted into the school's inner circle, Shuken learns all of its secrets, particularly those that the other branches of Hokuto, which already practiced less refined forms of Hikō, had never managed to approach.

The founding of Hokuto Shinken

Shuken then combined the perfect defensive techniques of Hokuto Sōke no Ken (北斗宗家の拳), inherited from his lineage, with the Keiraku Hikō of Seito Gekken to give birth to Hokuto Shinken (北斗神拳), a perfected school capable of killing or healing through the mere pressing of a pressure point. The new technique proved infinitely more dangerous than its parent arts, in itself justifying the rule of succession that he would establish shortly thereafter.

The rule of the sole successor

On the orders of the priests of Hokuto Sōke, Shuken must prevent the dissemination of these secrets, which have become too powerful. He thus kills all the disciples of Seito Gekken he had trained alongside, with the exception of his lover Yāma and her brother, whom he cannot bring himself to execute. He then establishes the absolute rule that will govern Hokuto Shinken up until Kenshiro's era: a single successor per generation, chosen from among the disciples, to prevent the art from falling into the wrong hands.

Presence in the work

Shuken never physically appears in the main Hokuto no Ken manga: he is only referenced through the perspective of his descendants, primarily by Ryuken and during the late revelation of the origins of Hokuto Sōke. It is in Sōten no Ken, the prequel by Tetsuo Hara, and more specifically in its extension Sōten no Ken Re:Genesis (from 2017 onward), that his role is fully developed, with the establishment of the historical context of the Yuezhi and the genealogy leading up to Kasumi Kenshirō.

Legacy: from the Three Kingdoms schism to modern Hokuto Shinken

A few centuries after Shuken, during the Three Kingdoms era, Hokuto Shinken underwent a schism. Three branches opposed one another, collectively known as the Hokuto Sanka Ken (北斗三家拳, "Fists of the Three Families of Hokuto"): Hokuto Sōka Ken (北斗曹家拳) in the service of Cao Cao, Hokuto Sonka Ken (北斗孫家拳) in the service of Sun Quan, and Hokuto Ryūka Ken (北斗劉家拳) in the service of Liu Bei. At the conclusion of the war, it was Hokuto Sōka Ken that established itself as the main branch of Hokuto Shinken, whose transmission then continued down to Ryuken, the sixty-third grand master, and then to his successor Kenshiro. Hokuto Ryūka Ken, for its part, fell into obscurity before resurfacing much later, in a corrupted form, as Hokuto Ryūken, which would oppose Kenshiro at the end of the series.
